Between Toefl and Toeic


TOEFL stands for Test Of English as a Foreign Language (Test of English as a foreign language), made by ETS (Educational Testing Service), an agency in the United States. The TOEFL test is required for college entrance requirements in almost all universities in the United States and Canada who then also for the students who apply to universities of Europe and Australia. This test undergraduate program (S-1) and graduate (S-2 or S-3).
In general, this test to assess:
  1. Students have the ability to write and grammar in English to be able to make a scientific article.
  2. Students have the ability to read English properly so that later can understand the books required textbooks.
  3. Students have the ability to listen well and truly on the description given lectures in English.
This test generally takes about three hours and is organized in four parts, namely the:
  •  grammatical structure and written expression
  •  listening comprehension 
  •  Reading Comprehension
  • Writing.
Until now, the TOEFL has undergone a change of format 3 evolution since it was first created 47 years ago. In addition to the change in format, TOEFLjuga changing very different in terms of results / value, as seen in the following chart

  2. In 1998-2005 TOEFL Computer Based Test (CBT)

TOEFL iBT test this new format is a tool that can measure the English language all four language skills (Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing) in an objective, valid and focused for those who follow this TOEFL test. Thus, the TOEFL iBT is a measure of the standard of English in the  academic world that is appropriate to beused as:

  1.  English language requirements for study abroad.
  2.  Screening scholarship or student exchange progra
  3. Standards readiness to follow academic courses in English

The TOEFL test is more oriented to American English, in contrast to the type of IELTS test oriented to British English

TOEIC stands for Test of English for International Communication. The TOEIC test is not yet well known by the public. Colleagues may only know the tests are intended for vocational students. That is because the government requires this test for them as a graduation requirement. However, it is not only vocational students who use this test. TOEIC test has also been used in banking circles. They even use it long ago before the advent of the TOEFL test. For colleagues who work or who will be working in a place that uses the English language, it is necessary to follow the TOEIC test.The TOEIC test is a measure of how high English proficiency in communicating. Therefore, the TOEIC test is required by some of the parties, as follows:
  1. Employees or staff who uses the English language in a variety of work environments, such as businesses, hotels, hospitals, restaurants, international meetings, conferences, and sports programs with international standards.
  2. Staff management, sales, and employees of the techniques in international business, trade and industry who need English in their work.
  3. Training candidates who use English as the language of instruction attend the training.
  4. The vocational students as a graduation requirement for the National Examination.

TOEIC TEST FORMAT

Until now, the type of TOEIC is a multiple choice test that consists of 200 questions and performed within 2 hours. Inside are two sessions, namely listening and reading sections, each session consists of 100 questions.

For listening skills must be completed within 45 minutes. Listening skills are divided into four skills, namely:
  1. photographs, 10 questions
  2. The question-response, question 30
  3. conversations, 30 questions
  4. short talks, 30 questions

For reading skills must be completed within 75 minutes. Reading skills are divided into four skills, namely:
  1. incomplete sentence, 40 questions
  2. error recognition, 20 questions
  3. single reading comprehension passage, 20 questions
  4. double passage reading comprehension, 20 questions

Material matter for each session has been adapted on the things that are familiar in the use of the English language daily. So, for colleagues who will do the TOEIC test need not worry.SCORE INTERPRETATIONTOEIC certificate has 5 colors. Each color signifies more will score. The colors are:
  • Orange ---> 10-215
  • Brown ---> 220-465
  • Green ---> 470-725
  • Blue ---> 730-855
  • Gold ---> 860-990


Summary


TOEIC and TOEFL are designed for different purposes. TOEFL is intended for students or students who wish to continue their studies in the United States and Canada. While TOEIC is intended for those whose native language is not English dialog wear and want to show the ability to communicate in English in the world of work and take part in globalization.
 

TOEIC and TOEFL have a different assessment standards. If the TOEFL score can not be used as the main criterion because each place has a different assessment, however the TOEIC, this test uses the international standard alignment. If abroad, TOIEC already very popular. The proof, of the existing data, it turns out this test has been used about 10,000 companies in the world. Perhaps, it could be because in addition to international standards, as well as TOEIC which has existed since 1979. Thus, the level was higher than the TOEFL test.
TOEIC score starting from the number 400 to 990. There are six levels, namely level 0/0 + Novice (score 10-250), level 1 Elementary (score 255-400), Intermediate level 1+ (score 405-600), level 2 Basic Working Proficiency (score 605-780), Advance Working profiency 2+ level (a score of 785-900) and level 3/3 + General Professional Proficiency (score 905-990).
TOEIC has two kinds of tests that test reading and listening with a score range of 10-990. While the TOEFL test has three kinds of options among which are PBT (Paper Based Test), CBT (Computer Based Test), and IBT (Internet Based Test). Score TOEFL test is based on PBT (310-677), CBT (30-300), and IBT (8-120).
